that and much more in minutes, but first, the white house is fuming at the n.r.a. for using the president's children in its latest ad, but today, president obama surrounded himself with other people's children for his gun control announcement. so, is there a double standard here or not? we spoke to fox news analyst laura ingraham. nice to see you. >> good to see you. >> today the president had a press conference and the children behind him. >> wall paper children, yeah, it's always quite a dramatic show when the president wants to put on a choreographed moment and obviously, the kids suffered enormously and their parents brought them, but i don't know. something about involving children in a conversation about guns and murder to me seems -- that's a tough one. >> welsh the white house is also upset with the n.r.a., while the white house used the children to stage the-- they're upset with the n.r.a. the n.r.a. has a new ad out. >> yeah. >> in which they talk about the president's children having security at their school and jay carney said it was repugnant and cowardly what the n.r.a. did.

are afraid it -- afraid of the cloud of the nra -- afraid of the clout of the nra. other measures like increased background checks or banning magazines have strong backing with the american public. >> many european scratch their heads at the mention of american gun laws. how do you explain the fascination america seems to have with guns? >> there's a lot of aspects to it. obviously, there is a culture of violence in the united states. there's a strong military culture in the united states. having said that, the argument you hear most often and that most people often believe, at least those who have guns, is that guns are a symbol of freedom. those are the people -- and believe me, there are lots of them -- who say that any attempt on the government to manage their lives is an assault on freedom. usually people who think that do not really question the argument, although it is obviously not a sound argument. the simplest way -- the simplest way of explaining this is that the freedom of some to possess these military weapons really restricts the freedom of many. just ask those parents wh

many gun owners themselves. when you actually talk to gun owners and nra members, they support by large majorities sensible and strengthening the current gun laws. what they support, 82% of gun owners, 72% of members actually support universal background checks. we are trying to keep guns and weapons out of the hands of dangerous people, criminals, and the seriously mentally ill. when you talk to people in west virginia, gun owners themselves want to be able to have guns in their homes. they also want to ensure that those guns do not fall into the hands of people who should not have them. the other constituency that is important is law enforcement. they are unanimous in their support for assault weapon ban for capacity magazines and closing loopholes. host: gun control could split obama, reid. they say backing restrictions could hurt the senate leader and other democrats. this story points out that for some democrats up for reelection, supporting the president will be treacherous terrain. they go on to talk about facing reelection battles in states where gun control is politically unpop
